Dub FX 18/04/2009 ‘Made’

Again, life throws a left hook into the jaw of reality, keeping it on a straight path, not letting it sway left or right. Again and again and again. Just damn.

Some People Call Me the Space Cowboy

Second Smoke Test from Lee Regan on Vimeo.

This is my first attempt at After Effects. This is a test shot for a music video I am helping produce. This scene involves the main characters leg catching on fire and smoking. Was an interesting process. The most difficult part was getting the motion tracking correct for not only the emitter that produces the smoke but also for how the smoke sets itself in the scene.

I finished part of my Thursday daily design. My goal on Thursdays is to paint something. This can be a digital or real painting as long as it lasts at least an hour. I have been asked by a family friend to create a painting for his house. This is the result. Started at about 9:00pm on Wednesday January 13th, 2010 and stopped at 3:34am on Thursday January 14th, 2010. This is just the start, the under painting for shadows and texture. I will be going back over it in the next couple of days and really bringing out the whites. This was the first painting I have done in almost 4 years and it made me extremely happy to create it. There is nothing like dancing in your kitchen at 3 in the morning because you realize you can still accomplish things. Leave me some comments, thanks!

First Daily Design Post

With 2010 right around the corner, Smashing Magazine has once again let loose with a great creative challenge. The challenge is to design something daily and show it to the world. Perfect. I accept the challenge! And you all should to!

I love David Lanham’s work. He is a source of inspiration for me when my mind slows to a crawl and the creativity just doesn’t flow freely. He recently put out this video showing time lapse of how he works. He creates some really stunning vegetables and it is great to see how other artists work. I hope you enjoy.

Watch how they work

This is perfect. All history should be shown this way. Pass it around.

Somethings just make way to much sense

Stumbled upon this awesome website that reminds me of older stop motion style animations. I love the flow of the website even though it is a bit challenging to understand how to navigate. But that brings me to a point for this article. Not every design needs to be as usable as possible. Some sites work better, like this one, when it comes to be a little more exploratory with the navigation. A major advantage of a website like this is that it can potentially attract the audience you want to work with.

By forcing the user to explore on their own and making them decide, you can learn a lot about them. For instance if they wish to take the time to explore and learn about your website then they will more likely take the time and effort a good project demands.

This navigation style is bold but effective. Now onto the fun stuff. The design of the website. As stated earlier it is that nice retro paper cutout style of stop motion animation. It really reminds of the Story of Rudolph movie. It is a nostalgic look but at the same time it is very new. The imagination of this website is also present everywhere. From the dresser in the bedroom being interactive to the Train that runs on the home screen, not a detail is missed. The site is simple and effective. The best part of this website you ask? Well, that is easy. It’s a Thai creative agency. The first one I have seen and it is right on par with the rest of the design world. Kudos to the people over at A Village Bangkok.

This is an amazing website that take you through many of the problems facing the great lakes today. It does it in a very imaginative way and in a way that not only educates but entertains.

Experience it yourself.

Great Lakes – Great Experience

I have been working on a project here at work. It is my first project in AS3 and one of the largest and most complex I have ever made. The user capabilities have made for a difficult time but the thing that keeps fighting back is a context sensitive aspect. I have a little function that helps people locate a nearby service based on their zip code. Works fine in the production environment, information is pulled from an external source and displayed to the user. However… once it is on a server it fails to do its job.

I have a crossdomain.xml file in place on the other server which I am pulling information from. I have narrowed it down to 2 things that could be my problem now.

  • 1. HTTP does not play nicely with HTTPS when it comes to Flash Player
  • 2. Flash Player, even when directed not to, looks for a policy file at the root. Bad Flash Player ! No, bad!

Suggestions? Ideas? I think I might be the only person trying this because all my searches come up with it either being HTTP to HTTP or HTTPS to HTTPS. Never a true crossover. The server I need to get information from I do not have access to because it is a third party that collects information for one of our clients. I’m exhausted with trying to figure out if it is me or the fact that HTTP and HTTPS when it comes to Flash Player just do not play nicely.

So you know, I have Read through this extensive document and think I got everything right. Would make it easier if I had access to the server to actually control what I am doing rather then depending on a third party.

Flash Player dislikes playing nicely
